This Sunday's message: The Song of Zechariah

September 18

Today's Reading: Isaiah 42:1-25

The first nine verses comprise the first of four "servant songs" in Isaiah. Each of these songs portray the Messiah as YHWH's servant who will come to provide salvation to the righteous and execute judgement on the wicked.

The Jews generally looked forward to the "Day of the Lord" because they thought it would mean judgment on their enemies and vindication for them. However, this and other Old Testament passages make it clear that merely belonging to the nation of Israel won't be enough. As we see throughout the Old Testament, God often disciplines His own people by bringing judgment when they rebel against Him. We are reminded that without the sacrifice of Jesus that makes it possible for us to be clothed with His righteousness, we would all be judged, too.

As Paul reminds us:
Ephesians 2:1–3 (ESV)
2 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.

Take some time today to thank Jesus for making it possible for you to have a relationship with God in spite of your sin.
