This Sunday's message: The Song of Zechariah

September 11

Today's Reading: John 10:1-42

When Jesus claims to be the "good shepherd", He is saying that He is the fulfillment of some of the prophecies that we have been reading about in this section, particularly Ezekiel 34. It is clear that Jesus is also claiming to be God in this passage. In this chapter we see two of the "I am" sayings of Jesus. The seven times that Jesus uses those words in John's gospel, He is essentially using the name of God that God revealed to Moses in Exodus 3:

Exodus 3:14 (ESV)
God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ”

The religious leaders clearly understand that Jesus is claiming to be God here because they are ready to stone Him for blasphemy.

If you are a disciple of Jesus, verse 28 is one of the most encouraging verses in the Bible because Jesus makes it clear that no one can snatch a genuine disciple form His hand. Read that verse again and thank God that your salvation is secure.
