This Sunday's message: The Song of Zechariah

August 24

Today's Reading: Isaiah 9:1-21

Today we begin a new section in our reading plan that we are calling "Anticipating an Eschatological Deliverer". Throughout the period of the prophets, we get glimpses of an eschatological savior-figure (a “Messiah,” though not always using that term) who will bring deliverance to God’s people.

Like many of the prophecies of Jesus, this chapter has both a near term and far term fulfillment. Part of this was fulfilled when Jesus came to earth and was born as a baby:

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given;
(Isaiah 9:6)

But much of the rest of the prophecy won't be fulfilled until His second coming when Jesus will establish an earthly kingdom over which He will reign.

The good news is that when we put our faith in Jesus we become part of His kingdom right here and now, even though we won't fully enjoy the final fulfillment of that kingdom until He returns.
