Delighting in God’s Word

Been a while since I’ve posted my thoughts from my Bible reading, but I have been doing a pretty good job of keeping up with my Bible reading plan.
Today’s reading was the second half of Psalm 119. That is undoubtedly one of my favorite chapters in the Bible because it expresses what I want my attitude to be toward God’s Word. While I think it’s important to have a plan to read the Bible systematically, I don’t ever want reading the Bible to become an obligation or duty.
The Psalmist never viewed God’s word as an obligation or a burden. He never had the mindset of trying to “get away” with as much as he could and still be obedient to God. He delighted in reading, knowing, understanding and keeping God’s law, knowing that was what was best for Him and also that it would lead to God getting the glory He deserves.
There was a time in my life where that was not the case. I did view reading the Bible as a duty, and not a great privilege and joy. There was a time when I tried to do the least possible in order to comply with the principles in the Bible. But I am thankful that God has brought me to a place where i do delight in His Word and I can’t wait to see what God has for me there each day. And though I don’t come close to perfect obedience, I am understanding more and more that God’s ways are what is best for me and so my mindset is that I want to do my very best to keep His commandments, not find ways around them.
If you’re struggling with your attitude towards God’s Word, maybe what you need is a good dose of Psalm 119 today.
